They decide to call their farm Sparta in the hope that their children will one day work as hard as the Spartans did. This is the birth of the Sparta cattle feeding operation. Dallas had a significant impact on the cattle feeding operation at Sparta. A massive extension of the Sparta feedlot is undertaken, with the new pens being built on Fragment farm. Sparta is the first meat plant in South Africa to debone carcass meat on a large, central-pack scale. Major renovations are undertaken at the Welkom meat plant to upgrade and expand the capacity of the plant. Individual Electronic Identification (EID) per animal is rolled out at the cattle feeding operation. Sparta now has the means to track the history of every animal from the time it arrives at the farm, until the carcass is loaded out at the Welkom plant. Further major renovations are commissioned at the Welkom plant, drastically increasing the freezing and chilling capacity at the plant. MEDICAL CARE We provide medical care to our staff through clinics situated at the cattle feeding operation in Marquard and at the meat plant in Welkom. As a result, many HIV-positive individuals have gained access to anti-retroviral medication. The company furthermore sets aside an annual budget for private tuberculosis testing.
